My Story
After graduating from college, my 16-year-long career as a competitive cheerleader ended. It left me rudderless, not sure of who I was without it. This also removed the routine of moving my body multiple times a week. I relished the fact that I didn’t have to work out. Once I started seeing shifts in my body and health, I realized I needed to work out. But I was still in an old mindset of “being skinny.” Dieting and working out to burn as many calories as possible. When we moved to Savannah, I tried CrossFit and Power Yoga for the first time and loved both. Unfortunately, as a young 20-something, I couldn’t afford both memberships so I started with CrossFit with my husband. This was the beginning of a life-altering journey.
Through CrossFit I learned healthier eating habits and how food should be seen as fuel, the benefits of strength training, and tailoring workouts to where you are in that moment. After our gym closed, I returned to power yoga, and I have never looked back. What started as my workout of choice has become a way of life. It lives in every aspect of my life, not just for an hour's workout. Yes, I have become stronger physically, but perhaps I am even stronger mentally. Through yoga, I have come to a better understanding of self and what health looks like for ME.
That is when I stopped seeking out external answers. The next diet fad, the perfect workout, turning others for approval. I started to pay attention to what I was consuming – food and content. I started to understand the impact my words had on myself and others, and most importantly, I took responsibility for my happiness.
In Fall 2015, I signed up for my first 200hr yoga certification. The. Most. Life. Changing. Experience. I completed a second Baptiste-inspired 200hr certification in July 2018 and a 300hr certification in October 2020. I am now an RYT-500, E-RYT-200, and a YACEP.
I am thankful for this strong foundation of self as I went on my five-year-long journey with infertility. The years of struggle led me to multiple doctors with few answers, and that’s when I got back to the basics. Started reducing the toxins in my life and focusing on whole-food nutrition. I have never felt more healthy and settled in my sense of self. I have finally found what balance looks like for me.
